Communication on progress

For the work of the Global Compact Network to be respected both worldwide and in Bulgaria, it is important that experiences and best practices are shared, and that companies report on how they act on their commitment. Recognizing this need, during the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in June 2004 all stakeholders expressed a strong desire for reinforcing the Communication on Progress as an indicator for continuing and strengthening the engagement of Global Compact participants.

A COP is an annual description of actions taken in support of the Global Compact principles, made available to stakeholders. It is expected of all participating companies till the end of the calendar year and must be shared publicly with stakeholders - through annual financial, sustainability or other prominent public repots, in print or on participant’s website. The purpose of the COP requirement is both to ensure and deepen the commitment of Global Compact participants and to safeguard the integrity of the initiative. It also aims to create a rich repository of corporate practices that serves as basis for learning and continuous performance improvement.

Completing and submitting a COP can also further reinforce the benefits companies derive from their participation in the Global Compact, such as improved market access, better and proactive risk management, reputational gains, access to capital, improved stakeholder relations, better employee morale and retention, etc.

Companies failing to communicate progress will be regarded as “non-communicating” and will be identified as such on the Global Compact website. Should a participant fail to submit a COP for two years, that participant would be labeled “inactive” on the mentioned website. All these Communications are displayed below and are also displayed on the international webpage of UN Global Compact in New York.

The Bulgarian Global Compact Secretariat has organized two interactive workshops in order to help companies, business associations, as well as NGOs draw up their Communication on Progress report and provided them with practical guidance and examples. The Secretariat is available for help and advice on how to prepare CoP report and will provide you personal assistance on that matter.
