As of the beginning of 2006, 140 Bulgarian companies, non-governmental organizations and academia are members of the National Global Compact (GC) Network and apply the ten principles of the Initiative in their daily practices. Since its launch in January 2003, under the auspices of President Parvanov , the Global Compact implemented with the active participation and financial contribution of its members numerous initiatives related to environment, health, education and youth. Among them are the projects: Unleashing Entrepreneurship; Love Bridge; Health – Shared Responsibility of Private Companies; Sharing Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility. This led to the establishment of a formal network of large and small and medium private companies, non governmental organizations, academia and business associations that shares the principles of corporate social responsibility.
For the period 2006-2010 the network was managed by the Advisory Board, selected through an open and transparent procedure. The network activities were supported by a network Secretariat within the UNDP Bulgaria Country Office.
The Global Compact encourages active and socially responsible companies to adopt and implement in their operations ten universal principles in the areas of environment, labor standards, human rights, and fight against corruption. The Global Compact aims to engage business in the fight against major social and ecological challenges which growing globalization entails.
The Bulgarian Global Compact Network is a formal assembly of companies, non governmental organizations and academia who strive to learn from each other, to communicate, to generate an advocacy impact and initiate dialogue or partnerships with other actors such as the government, local authorities, labour organisations, civil society organizations and academia. In order to strengthen and enhance the role of the Global Compact Network in Bulgaria governance framework consisting of Advisory Board and Secretariat has been established in 2006.
With the end of the UNDP Bulgaria Country Office assistance, the GC Network had to identify and formulate a sustainability strategy. In 2009/2010 the members of the Global Compact Network Bulgaria developed an institutional framework for the future organizational development.
As a result a new independent organization – Association Global Compact Network Bulgaria – was founded on 10 September 2010 by 20 leading companies and organizations, members the UN Global Compact. The Association is managed by a Steering Committee and Control Committee.
