The first discussion meeting on the UN Sustainable Development Goals titled “THE BUSINESS – A FORCE FOR GOOD” took place in Bulgaria only 5 months after the adoption of the Goals during the summit meeting in New York. The event was with the special participation of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, who presented his vision on Bulgaria’s involvement in the implementation work on the Goals.
The Global Compact Local Network in Bulgaria (GCLN Bulgaria) organized the event in order to declare that it is aware of the responsibility and the chance to prove to the society that the business has an important constructive role and will be the proactive side in outlining the road and the implementation of the Goals.
‘Today we present our Strategic Plan to the head of the State and to the other stakeholders in the society on the work and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. We want to receive advice on whether we meet the expectations towards the responsible business, and whether our visions will be of use to the society. We want to motivate the state, employers’ organizations and trade unions, the non-governmental sector, and the youth organizations to develop and share their plans, to work and achieve together the same synergies that we obtain from the collective actions of the Network’, Mr. Ognyan Trayanov, Chairperson of the National Council of GCLN Bulgaria.
The panelists in the discussion, Mr. Spiros Nomikos, Solvay Sodi (JSC), Mr. Tim Kurth, Aurubis Bulgaria (JSC), Assoc. Dr. Grigoriy Vazov, University of Finance, Business, and Entrepreneurship, Mr. Garry Levesley, ContourGlobal Maritsa Iztok 3 (JSC), Mr. Sasho Dontchev, Overgas Inc. (JSC), and Mr. Stefano Costa, Devnya Cement (JSC), discussed the goals that the responsible business has recognized as relevant for Bulgaria and around which it has joint efforts.
Nowadays the responsible business is a main driver moving the society forward. The Bulgarian network is an example for business organization which works on the topics of sustainable development and its collective projects and thus places the traditional concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on another level – collaborative social responsibility.
The President Mr. Plevneliev paid tribute to the work done and clearly expressed his support for the Strategic Plan of the Bulgarian Network:
‘You are part of the legitimate, meaningful way in which an action plan could be build for our development strategy. I would like to shake hands with you because you lead, you undertook the initiative and work towards the Goals. The Bulgarian state is part of this plan. There is a need for actions, responsible implementation, yes, there is a need for a plan, but there is also a need for realization.
The Bulgarian business is a pillar for the society. I make a difference between the responsible business and the shadow business. You have a cause of one modern Bulgarian state, where the rules are above all, and where we have joint shared responsibility. The good, meaningful ideas have the ability to acquire the effect of the domino. I am behind you. I am one of you’, Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Mr. Trayanov together with the participants in the discussion presented the President with a Personalized Copy No 01 of the Strategic Plan 15+ as a guarantee for its implementation.
