As of the beginning of 2006, 120 Bulgarian companies, non-governmental organizations and academia are members of the National Global Compact (GC) Network and apply the ten principles of the Initiative in their daily practices. Since its launch in January 2003 the Global Compact implemented with the active participation and financial contribution of its members numerous initiatives related to environment, health, education and youth. Among them are the projects: Unleashing Entrepreneurship; Love Bridge; Health – Shared Responsibility of Private Companies; Sharing Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility. This led to the establishment of an informal network of large and small and medium private companies, non governmental organizations, academia and business associations that shares the principles of corporate social responsibility. 

New stage in Global Compact development was the endorsement of an Advisory Board that took the lead over the provision of ongoing policy and strategic advice for the GC initiative in Bulgaria as well as facilitation of constructive dialogue among members and partners. It represents the Bulgarian GC Network at regional and global events.

The members of the Advisory Board were selected through an open and transparent online procedure in March 2006 and announced during the National Forum Global Compact +3 “Business against Corruption” on April 18, 2006.

The GC Advisory Board consists of five Global Compact members. The members of the Board - companies, non governmental organizations and academia enjoy solid standing and are leaders in CSR policies and practices. They also have a sound understanding of the Global Compact philosophy and work to implement the ten GC principles in a spirit of competence, respectability and interaction without pursuing commercial interests.

The present Advisory Board of the Bulgarian GC Network has the following members:

• Elitsa Barakova, Executive Director, Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation
• Bojidar Danev, President, Bulgarian Industrial Association

The Advisory Board has a two-year mandate and convenes on a quarterly basis.

Bulgarian GC Network Secretariat

The GC Network activities are supported by a network Secretariat. The Secretariat is located within the UNDP Bulgaria Country Office and is comprised of a GC Coordinator and a Development Partnership Projects Consultant. The GC Coordinator acts as the Focal Point for the GC initiative in Bulgaria. The Secretariat is in charge of internal and external communications of the network.

The Bulgarian Global Compact Network activities:

• Act as a country Global Compact platform, assisting companies with the implementation of the ten GC principles;

• Assist companies in the preparation of their annual "Communication on Progress";

• Act as a country, regional or sector platform for dialogue on issues related to the ten GC principles, responsible corporate citizenship and the advancement of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals;

• Act as a country, regional or sector platform for learning and constructive exchange of CSR practices. Encourage network members to develop and share case studies; contribute to local learning by organizing country or regional events, and/or establishing discussion forums and activities organized around local priorities related to responsible business;

• Motivate network members to develop partnership projects to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals;

• Serve as a Global Compact Outreach Mechanism to gain the support of additional companies by organizing outreach events;

• Identify and Discuss emerging issues related to globalization, particularly the challenge of promoting inclusiveness and social responsibility by all participants involved (network will also serve as mediator in cases of controversial company behavior under the Global Compact’s integrity measures).
